Free OpenVPN + Stunnel on AWS

Setting up OpenVPN tunneling through Stunnel on AWS. You can choose either the free or paid tier for this.

Overview

This article will be sectioned into 3 parts. Feel free to mix and match the parts that you need.

  1. AWS Registration and EC2 Configuration
  2. Ubuntu 16.04 OpenVPN & Stunnel Server Setup
  3. Client Setup (except iOS)

AWS Registration and EC2 Configuration

If you already have an AWS setup with Ubuntu 16.04, skip to the server configuration part. If not, head on over to https://aws.amazon.com/ to sign up for an account.

Select EC2 Region

Once, you have completed the registration, log into your account. On the top right hand corner, select the region in which you want your EC2 to reside in. You can do this by choosing a region that has a lowest latency from where you are. You can use one of these online tools.
